Midori Spirit Gauge Guide

Quick Answer

Midori’s Spirit Gauge has two connected jobs: build usable gauge with her regular and charging attacks, then land specific finishers to raise the gauge level.

Midori’s Spirit Gauge has two connected jobs: build usable gauge with her regular and charging attacks, then land specific finishers to raise the gauge level. Once that level reaches red, her Burst becomes available as a three-part, timing-based attack. The practical loop is therefore build gauge → land a level-raising finisher → reach red → execute Moment of Insight with deliberate timing.

The important distinction is between the gauge’s current amount and its level. Several moves add gauge, while others raise the level only if their required hit connects. Treating those as the same thing is the main reason a combo can look correct without producing the red state you need.

This guide reflects Midori’s documented pre-launch kit as of October 28, 2026. Monster Hunter Outlanders is scheduled to open its North America, Japan, and Europe servers at 22:00 UTC that day, so launch balancing or interface labels may differ from preview material. Follow each move’s condition rather than memorizing a screen position: sufficient gauge, a hit, a final hit, a Perfect Evade, or red gauge level. The Attack, React and Burst input names below describe the documented simplified layout; Classic controls expose more separate actions, so preserve the move condition when using another layout.

How Midori’s Spirit Gauge works

Midori is an Assault Adventurer who uses a Long Sword hidden in her shamisen. The official launch preview announces her as the first featured limited SSR Adventurer, recruited with Featured Contracts. That is an announced recruitment route, not a claim that the banner has already opened or a substitute for its current guarantee rules. Her kit combines direct gauge building, attacks that convert gauge into higher levels, evasion, and a red-level Burst. Her combat style emphasizes graceful evasion and skills that build the Spirit Gauge faster.

Resource stateWhat changes itWhat it enables
Spirit Gauge amountChain Slash hits, charging Charged Spirit Blade, a successful charged hit below the threshold, and a successful Perfect Evade follow-upSpirit Slash, Striding Spirit Blade, Blade of Truth, and other gauge-consuming actions

Red gauge levelReached by successfully raising the level through the moves aboveThe three-stage Moment of Insight Burst sequence

Gauge generation is not enough by itself. If you fill the gauge but miss the last hit of Spirit Slash, you have spent time and possibly gauge without earning that route’s level increase. Likewise, a move that “significantly” adds gauge is not automatically a level increase. Read the hit result, not just the animation.

Midori’s official character description identifying her Long Sword and Spirit Gauge

Midori’s character reference identifies the Long Sword and Spirit Gauge. It is a character description, not a combat gauge-state screenshot.

Build gauge with Chain Slash

When the Spirit Gauge is insufficient, tapping Attack performs Chain Slash. The chain reaches up to five attacks, and every connected hit fills the gauge. This is Midori’s clearest low-resource starter because it does not ask you to spend gauge first.

Do not interpret “up to five” as a demand to finish all five attacks every time. The value of the chain is that each hit contributes. If the monster begins an attack or moves outside the remaining swings, preserving your position is more useful than forcing the last inputs. You can resume building on the next opening.

Chain Slash also creates access to Midori’s lateral branch. After performing it, use the left joystick to aim and tap Attack for Sidestep Slash. This makes the starter more than a stationary gauge filler: it can set up a repositioning route when continuing directly in front of the monster would be unsafe.

Raise the gauge level through reliable finishers

Midori has several documented ways to raise the Spirit Gauge level. They differ in setup, resource demand, and which hit must connect.

Spirit Slash

When the Spirit Gauge is sufficient, tapping Attack changes the available action to Spirit Slash. The sequence consumes gauge and can continue for up to three attacks. Landing the last hit raises the Spirit Gauge level by one.

Start the sequence when the monster is likely to remain in range through the final strike. The first and second attacks do not satisfy the level condition on their own. If the opening is too short, continue building or reposition instead of spending gauge on a sequence that cannot finish.

Sidestep Slash into Striding Spirit Blade

After Chain Slash, aim with the left joystick and tap Attack to perform Sidestep Slash. If the Spirit Gauge is sufficient, keep tapping Attack to perform Striding Spirit Blade, then tap Attack again to use the third strike of Spirit Slash. Landing that last hit raises the gauge level by one.

This branch is useful when a direct continuation would leave Midori poorly aligned. Its purpose is not a free level by sidestepping; the route still depends on sufficient gauge and the final Spirit Slash strike connecting. Use the directional input to improve the angle before committing to the finisher.

Charged Spirit Blade

Hold Attack to swing the Long Sword and charge. The action continuously fills the Spirit Gauge, then releasing the input—or holding it for the required duration—performs Spinning Slash.

The move has two results on hit:

  • At 60% Spirit Gauge or above, the hit raises the Spirit Gauge level by one.
  • Below 60%, the hit significantly increases the Spirit Gauge amount instead.

That threshold turns Charged Spirit Blade into a planning tool. Below 60%, use it to build toward a later conversion. At or above 60%, protect the release angle because the hit can provide the level increase directly. The threshold is checked against gauge state, but the reward still requires the attack to hit.

Blade of Truth

When the Spirit Gauge is sufficient, Blade of Truth consumes a large amount of it to deliver a heavy Burst-damage attack. If Blade of Truth lands on the monster, the Spirit Gauge level rises by one.

This is a concentrated conversion: a large gauge cost is tied to one important hit. Use it when the target is committed, recovering, or otherwise offering a clear opening. If the target is about to move, a route with incremental hits may be easier to confirm. “Heavy Burst damage” describes the attack’s role, but it does not justify using it blindly whenever the action is available.

Spend red gauge on Moment of Insight

At red Spirit Gauge level, tapping Burst consumes Spirit Gauge and starts Moment of Insight, which can deal up to three powerful slashes. This is not a passive reward for reaching red; it is an execution sequence with a defensive interaction and timed extensions.

Moment of Insight I can automatically parry an attack. A successful parry increases the Spirit Gauge level by one. During the sequence, red circles appear as a timing cue. Continue the Timing Hit when those circles overlap to increase the damage dealt.

The later stages depend on visible flashes:

  1. Near the end of Moment of Insight I, tap Burst during the flash to chain into Great Moment of Insight II.
  2. Near the end of Moment of Insight II or Great Moment of Insight II, tap Burst during the flash to chain into Great Moment of Insight III.
  3. Avoid rapid button mashing. The overlap and flash cues define when the next input has value.

The safest learning goal is clean continuation, not maximum speed. First recognize the red state, then identify the circle overlap, then watch for the end-of-stage flash. If a hunt is visually busy, focus on one cue at a time until the sequence becomes readable.

Recover gauge through Perfect Evade

Midori’s React input performs an evade. After a Perfect Evade, Standing Spin Slash triggers automatically, dashing forward into a horizontal slash. If that slash hits, it significantly increases the Spirit Gauge. Tapping Attack then performs Double Slash, and its hit raises the Spirit Gauge level by one.

This creates a compact defensive-to-offensive route:

  1. Read the incoming attack and tap React for the evade.
  2. Earn the Perfect Evade so Standing Spin Slash triggers.
  3. Let the automatic forward slash reconnect with the monster.
  4. Tap Attack for Double Slash only when the follow-up can land.
  5. Confirm the hit before assuming the gauge level increased.

Each condition matters. An ordinary evade is not described as triggering the same route. A Perfect Evade starts Standing Spin Slash, but the gauge increase still depends on its hit. Double Slash then has its own hit requirement for the level increase. The full reward comes from timing and contact, not the dodge animation alone.

Choose the right route for the opening

Hunt situationPreferred decisionReason
Gauge is low and the monster is available for several hitsBegin Chain SlashEvery connected hit builds gauge without requiring an existing reserve
Gauge is sufficient and the target will remain closeComplete Spirit SlashIts final hit converts the sequence into one gauge level
You need a new angle after Chain SlashAim Sidestep Slash, then continue only with sufficient gaugeThe branch repositions before routing into the third Spirit Slash strike
You have room to hold an attackUse Charged Spirit Blade and watch the 60% thresholdThe same move builds amount below the threshold or raises a level at or above it on hit
You have sufficient gauge and one clear hit windowConsider Blade of TruthIt trades a large amount of gauge for heavy Burst damage and a level on hit
An incoming attack is predictableAttempt the React Perfect Evade routeA successful automatic slash builds gauge, and Double Slash can add a level
Gauge level is red and the monster offers a readable windowStart Moment of InsightRed unlocks the timed three-stage Burst sequence

This is a decision map, not a fixed rotation. Midori’s kit rewards changing routes when the monster changes position. The shared rule is to protect the hit that grants the level increase.

Diagnose a stalled Spirit Gauge

If Midori’s gauge is not progressing as expected, identify which condition failed:

  • The amount rose, but the level did not. Chain Slash and a sub-60% Charged Spirit Blade hit build the gauge amount; neither substitutes for a level-raising finisher.
  • Spirit Slash spent gauge without a level. The last hit must land. Starting or partially completing the sequence is insufficient.
  • The Sidestep branch ended early. It starts after Chain Slash, uses directional aiming for Sidestep Slash, and needs sufficient gauge to continue into Striding Spirit Blade and the third Spirit Slash strike.
  • Blade of Truth did not provide the expected level. The attack must land on the monster.
  • The evade route gave only partial value. Perfect Evade must trigger Standing Spin Slash, that slash must hit for gauge gain, and Double Slash must hit for the level increase.
  • Moment of Insight stopped before the later stages. The continuation input belongs near the end-of-stage flash; the overlapping red circles are the separate damage-timing cue.
  • Burst is unavailable even though the bar looks full. Moment of Insight requires red Spirit Gauge level, not merely a filled gauge amount.
